3.1.11 Support for Schools from Districts, Ministries and Other Systems


The following is an overview of suggested supports for schools. This list was part of a discussion paper developed by CAP for Human Resources Development Canada. Refer to other sections of this Internet essay for elaboration of the points relating to other agencies.

Support from School Districts

School districts can support their schools in their readiness efforts by:

v implementing a comprehensive policy on readiness

v providing staff development funds and staff support at the district level

v supporting the integration of preschool and after school programs with regular school programs

v providing release time for teachers to meet with preschool staff

v supporting parent resource centres in schools.

Policies and Leadership from Education Ministries

Education ministries can support school readiness by:

v reviewing the goals and assessment criteria for early childhood education funding and supporting full-time kindergarten programs

v funding a full range of learning diagnosis and services

v monitoring the development of young children and related programs/ services

v providing administrative and educational support services

v funding and supporting professional development in early childhood education..

Support and Services from Other Ministries and Agencies

Other agencies and ministries can help to support school readiness by :

v funding a full range of clinical and family support services

v funding and supporting parent resource centers in schools and communities

v conducting studies and surveys on children's readiness to learn and related services

v disseminating research and other information on readiness to learn.
