Becoming Barbie
This 47 minute documentary video examines eating disorders from the perspective of the
media's representation of women in fashion magazines and advertising. Interviews with
students, a public health nurse, and Naomi Wolfe are interspersed with media examples to
make the point that eating disorders are a severe problem and that our health care system
is poorly equipped to handle this illness.

Making Decisions: An Appproach to Prevention
This program consists of 8 lessons which may be integrated in other subject. Grade 6 is
considered an appropriate level to develop the cognitive and affective elements needed in
decision-making. This ability is important in facing peer and social pressures (e.g. in
relation to substance use).
Making Decisions II
Young people need to be able to identify the effects of their priorities on their
decisions. By grade 7 most students have had at least indirect exposure to alcohol,
tobacco and marijuana, and many may soon be faced with making decisions about
experimenting with these drugs. This resource will assist in the development of skills
that will help them deal with various forms of pressure from peer groups and other
external sources.

PAL Smoking Prevention Program
The PAL Smoking Prevention Program uses a psycho-social approach to smoking education with
the intention of helping children to resist the increasing pressures to smoke that affect
11-13 year olds. The recommended level for using PAL is grade 6. It includes the teacher's
kit, a promotional brochure, and additional parent resources produced in collaboration
with the Canadian Home and School/Parent-Teacher Federation. PAL stands for peer-assisted
learning. The program uses group work and peer interaction to explore the smoking issue
and emphasizes the positive aspects of not smoking.
