Case Studies- Mental Health Malcolm Munroe Memorial Jr. High - Sydney River, NS Creating an inviting school We have initiated a series of activities based around a combination of inservice training programs. classroom guest speakers and pro-active intervention by our Guidance Department in cooperation with students, parents and staff. We provide opportunities for parents to familiarize themselves with our school and thereby increase their comfort level and that of their children. We have initiated a very successful non-retention program which has gone a long way toward the creation of a positive school environment. Programs on effective parenting have been hosted by our school and we constantly accept a pro-active stance on the promotion of such events as Black History month, Women in History, Family Violence Prevention Week as well as many others. We try to encourage the involvement of as many students and staff as possible in these programs. Wellness is a holistic approach to well being. Wellness is a proactive (preventative) approach to gaining optimal health. Health promotion is a major part of the restructured health care system. The Wellness Fair greatly assists everyone in taking the right steps to gain up to date information which will assist in making decision on how to lead a healthy life style. Students will be able to view displays on Active Living, Nutrition, Smoking, Healthy Habits, Sun Sense, Healthy Hearts, Dental Hygiene, Personal Development and Relationships. Parents and community members will be able to view the above displays. There will also be a Blood Pressure Check Station, Body Mass Index area, and there will be a Mini Active Living Presentation. Network North and Espanola High School work as a team to provide support the student and family. Individual program with educational goals and mental health goals are established with the client, counselors, mental health worker and the teacher responsible for the education of the student. Target Audience: 12-14 years Grades 7/8 to 9 5-17 years Grades 10-12 Port Hardy Secondary School, Port Hardy, BC Celebration 95 & 96, etc. One day a year, where possible within Education Week, we schedule a special day of celebration. We celebrate health, physical-emotional; culture; (we have over 22 cultural groups in our community including a student population of 30+%); and hopes and dreams. During the school day all students, grades 8-12 and our feeder grades 7s, choose from a variety of workshops (from acupressure to dreams to self defence for girls to a focus on Japan, etc.) In the evening the whole community is invited in for an International Food Fair, Displays and Presentations. A resource person has been hired by the combined efforts of Education, Mental Health and Family & Children Services to organize opportunities for parents and children to be together, solve issues together, prevent problems together. This resource person works out of two "school" communities with existing staff and volunteers to establish programs, activities and opportunities that could continue on their own. Target Audience 3-5 years pre-school 6-8 years kindergarten 9-11 grades 1-3 12-14 grades 4-6/7 Hebron Consolidated, Hebron, Nova Scotia Crises Intervention Team We have set up a team of teachers who have volunteered to help intervene in crises situations. We have held an inservice to better prepare these staff members to deal with grieving and trauma associated with death, accidents, violence in homes. We recently went through a double murder suicide crisis involving the family of one of our grade four students. we had clergy assistance and the backup of system guidance counselors and mental health staff from the local hospital. Target Audience: 6-8 years kindergarten 9-11 grades 1-3 12-14 years grades 4-6/7 Battleford Central School, Battleford, Saskatchewan Day Treatment Program Small groups of children work on social or lifeskills using a token economy as the incentive. The program has been designed through mental health but Battleford Central was the initial pilot school. Children work on the skills over a 3 month period with reinforcement from all staff involved. Target Audience: 3-5 years 6-8 years kindergarten 9-11 grades 1-3 Mountainview Elementary, Sydney, Nova Scotia The activity involves the establishment of a * large aquarium in the library area of our school. This aquarium will eventually become a self-sustaining ecosystem with live plants, different types of fish, etc. We have enlisted the help of a local marine biologist to assist in its establishment and in instructing the children in the proper maintenance. Target Audience: 6-8 years 9-11 grades 1-3 Central School, Yarmouth, Nova Scotia Crisis Intervention Committee This is a school-based committee involving community resource people that is in place with a set of policy guidelines to assist members of the school community in times of crisis (death, accident, etc.). The committee has met to review guidelines and to seek input from outside agencies regarding appropriate staff responses for children at our school and/or their families at a time of crisis. The group is chosen based on a school-wide survey in which students identify 2 or 3 fellow. Students or staff who already help them. From this survey list a group is chosen which represents all of the subgroups in the school. The group is new each year. Natural Helpers from the prior years continue training through ongoing sessions. So far, 12 staff and 62 students have been trained. Marie, ON Unit on Friendship The primary children met in a whole group for introductory activities. They greeted each other in different languages, discussed friendship and sang songs. A guest speaker came from Heart and Stroke Foundation. The children went to another school to meet and form new friendships. The children were divided into friendships - caring, sharing, liking, helping and listening. In each of these groups they worked on an activity on friendship. Each group had a specific area of study - arts, languages, math, sciences, technology, personal and social studies. This program runs 3 lunch periods per week. Students take part only once during the week. the school pastoral animator works with children on their self-esteem and other problems. Lindsay is at our school twice a week and her role is very informal with the staff and the students. The social worker from the CLSC and works with individuals and families on self-esteem, emotional problems, and family relations. Pat works with students in school and also in the home with their families. The school psychologist works with students on a once a week basis. Her role is to test students and to make recommendations to parents. This is presently being done with a class of learning disabled grade 7 students. We can build characteristics of self-esteem in children. When the proper conditions are established within a school, the entire school climate changes and students begin to blossom into highly motivated individuals. Activities include: 1. Student of the week. An award (given to students on a weekly basis) for students who have worked hard, been kind to others, excelled in any area. 2. Office monitors - a duty given to students to develop confidence. 3. Assemblies weekly for students to share stories, songs, poems, etc. that they have written. 4. Birthday greetings are sent to all students in card form. Happy birthday is sung to each child by principal and secretary on their birthday. 5. "Good News From the Principal" letters are sent home regularly to celebrate the successes of the students. These are achieved through one-on-one counseling, animating class discussion on topics such as honesty, humility, kindness, etc. and bringing in outside resources such as speakers, videos, to deal with subjects such as drugs/alcohol, suicide, sexuality, abuse choices, peer pressure, goals, know your heroes. Animating parent information meetings or providing resources for these on topics such as discipline, setting limits, self-esteem and drug and alcohol is also part of the program. It involves the creation of a link between the past and the future by taking 20 tapes containing "the story of Pond Inlet" as seen by many of the community's elders and producing a back with pictures to support the text.
