Lifelong Learning in Capacities to Use Technology

The development of teachers is an example of life-long learning. There are many stages in the development of teachers that are necessary in acquiring these capacities (Shannon & McCall, 1991) Proponents of technology could choose to intervene in any of following stages to influence the professional preparation of teachers.

1. Undergraduate studies in a technology-related discipline(s) (other than education)

2. Practical life experiences related to technology

3. Recruitment strategies used by education faculties to identify good candidates

4. Entrance requirements to education faculty programs that relate to technology

5. The profile and philosophy of the education faculty program.

6. The program requirements related to major and minor studies, the required and elective courses related to technology and the content of specific courses.

7. Ensuring that the teaching practicum includes time in an assignment that allows for use of technologies.

8. Supporting new teachers in their induction years into the teaching profession with support for technology related skills, knowledge, practices.

9. Offering training, orientation in technology and teaching methodologies that use technology:

a) selected workshops, conferences inside or outside school districts

b)encouraging or supporting school district programs, policies and staff development related to technology

10. Encouraging teachers to take specialized certificate programs related to technology.

11. Encouraging teachers to take post-graduate studies leading to a Masters or Ph.D. that includes a focus on technology.

12. Encouraging teacher participation in action research projects on technology.
